Vroeger, toen Rool een klein rooltje was, was ik al gefascineerd door computers, robots en automatisering. Uren kon ik dromen, nadenken en prusten aan en over computers. Niet geheel onlogisch dus dat ik daarna Informatica ging studeren aan de TU Delft. Ik werd echt helemaal blij toen ik daar in aanraking kwam met kunstmatige intelligentie. Een van de boeken die ik daarvoor moest lezen was "Artificial Intelligence, a Modern Approach", kortweg AIMA, geschreven door Stuart Russel en Peter Norvig. 

Die Peter Norvig is een van mijn helden. Zo'n tien jaar geleden kreeg hij een nieuwe baan, director of search quality bij Google, verantwoordelijk voor het zoek algoritme. (Tegenwoordig is hij director of research bij Google). Sinds die tijd weet ik al, de precieze werkwijze van de zoekmachine is niet door gewone stervelingen te begrijpen.

Afgelopen zomer kwam ik toevallig een link tegen naar ai-class.com, een expiriment van Stanford University. In deze online klas gaan ze de beginselen van Artificial Intelligence uitlegen, compleet met youtube lessen, huiswerk en examens. En de professoren? Naast Sebastiaan Thrun mijn held Peter Norvig. Je snapt het natuurlijk al, ik zou en moest meedoen aan deze klas. En samen met mij nog 160.000 anderen!

De bovenstaande foto is opgave 7 van mijn huiswerk voor week 1. Is de gegeven heuristische functie wel admissable en wat zijn de eerste drie nodes die het A* zoek algoritme zal bezoeken. Ik had de antwoorden wel willen posten, maar dat mag niet. Ik ben natuurlijk wel gebonden aan de Stanford Honor Code.
